We’ll go over the different newborn diapers offered at Diva Diapers so you can make an educated purchase.

The Prefold – Yes, the prefold is one of the old school ways of cloth diapering but its pretty fool proof as a newborn diaper as well as economical. A newborn does not wiggle or squirm as much as an older baby or toddler so it’s easier to get the fold nice and snug. You also don’t have to be a diapering whiz to use a prefold. There are simple folds you can do and you can also fold the cloth into thirds and then place it in a cover. If you do prefold you should purchase the following:  DivaDiapers prefold options – The DSQ natural or bleached Chinese prefolds in Premie or Infant, Knickernappies’ Indian prefolds, Hemp Babies Little Weeds or Thirsties Duo Hemp prefolds.

A Snappi if you choose to do a few folds that will require your prefold to be fastened together. This is a smart purchase because even if you go into cloth diapering a newborn thinking you will never do a fancy fold on your baby as time goes on you’ll become more confident. You may want to do that jelly roll fold that everyone keeps raving about!

Four to six diaper covers – Any one of the incredibly adorable little covers from Imse Vimse covers or wool, Thirsties Diaper Cover (v2) or the Duo Wrap found in Snaps or Aplix, Econobum, Best Bottoms, or Flip. Keep in mind that while the one size option may be better financially in the long term you should still purchase a few newborn sized covers so the fit is snugger when baby is brand new.

The All-in-One (AIO) – It may be tempting to purchase an entire fluffy stash of one size AIOs for your newborn but hold off. You do have 24 diapers that you should be purchasing and you don’t want for the big day to come only to realize that all of those cute diapers you bought are too big for your new one. The appeal of AIOs is that they are “daddy and daycare friendly.” That’s not saying that dads or daycares can’t use cloth diapers, it’s a general statement meaning that these diaper are super easy to use. They are a one step system and most similar to disposables. If I were building a newborn stash I would purchase four AIOs. Here are the options at Diva Diapers:
Sized – Imse Vimse in Extra Small or bumGenius Newborn diapers
One Size Options – Thirsties Duo AIO, bumGenius Freetime AIO or Elemental

The Pocket Diaper – This is another non-cloth diaper user friendly diaper as it looks and acts like the AIO. The hindrance of the pocket diaper, however, is the work you have to do to “stuff” the diaper. The pocket diaper has sized options and one size options. At our store we have Knickernappies’ Custom Fit diapers for the sized option and bumGenius 4.0’s in aplix or snaps for the one size option.

I think the key to cloth diapering your newborn is to take everything in stride, be open to try something new and allow yourself to not sweat the small stuff. So your one size bumGenius leaked b/c it was too big? No big deal! Tuck the bumGenius away for a bit and use more prefolds or a sized AIO. You can do it and your baby’s bum will thank you!

Depending on the length that your little one sleeps consider using the Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted diaper. With this diaper you have a microfiber soaker that’s sewn in. Then you have the ability to add another soaker or insert into a little tunnel behind the sewn in soaker. You do need to have a cover for a fitted as there isn’t any kind of waterproofing added to it. A good choice would be the Thirsties Diaper Cover or Duo Wrap.

If you use a pocket diaper like the Knickernappies’ Custom Fit or bumGenius 4.0 you have a plethora of insert options. An insert that’s made of hemp like the Hemp Babies Little Weeds can be wrapped around a microfiber insert and then stuffed into the pocket. Hemp is a great material because the material absorbs up to 20% of its weight. You can also look into using Knickernappies’ Super-Do inserts or Hemp Stay-Dry Doubler. The Super-Do was made for heavy wetters and overnights. With six layers of hemp terry as well as two microfiber layers this is one insert that packs a punch!

I personally love using a prefold either tri-folded and then placed on top of an insert stuff into the pocket or wrapped around an insert. I’ve already mentioned using Hemp Babies but you can also use any of the prefolds found at Diva Diapers. If you’re looking for something less expensive try Knickernappies’ Indian Cotton Prefolds.

The key to nighttime diapering is to think outside of the box and be flexible. What worked when your child was a newborn will not work when she’s over a year old. Be flexible and use some of our suggestions!
